Morgan Stanley Capital International (“MSCI”), the leading global provider of indices, has announced that the shares of Digi Communications N.V., one of the leading European telecommunications companies, will be included in the reference indices dedicated to the frontier markets. The shares of Digi Communications, tradable on the Bucharest Stock Exchange under DIGI symbol, will be included in the MSCI Frontier and MSCI Romania indices. These indices capture large and mid-cap companies. The MSCI Frontier index includes companies across 28 Frontier Markets countries, including Romania, while the MSCI Romania index covers the medium and large-sized companies listed on the Bucharest Stock Exchange. The inclusion will be effective as of the market close on May 31st, 2024.
Serghei Bulgac, CEO of Digi Communications, stated: “We are delighted by MSCI’s decision to include DIGI shares in their indices. This milestone underscores our commitment to delivering robust financial performance, maintaining strong governance, and enhancing liquidity and investor relations. The inclusion highlights the growing international presence of the Romanian capital market, particularly in MSCI indices, which are closely monitored by numerous global institutional investors. We are confident this will bring substantial benefits to all our shareholders.”
Inclusion in global indices like MSCI Frontier and MSCI Romania is significant because it enhances the visibility and credibility of the company among international investors, potentially leading to increased demand for its shares. There is an essential pool of institutional investors, including mutual funds and ETFs, that often use such indices as benchmarks for their investments, which can result in higher capital inflows. Consequently, being part of local and global indices can improve the liquidity of the company’s shares, making them more attractive to a broader range of investors and potentially leading to a more accurate reflection of the company’s market value.
Locally, DIGI shares are included in the BET, the main index of the Bucharest Stock Exchange, which tracks the performance of the most liquid companies, as well as BET-TR, BET-TRN, BET-XT, BET-XT-TR, BET-XT-TRN, BET-BK, BET Plus and ROTX indices.
In 2024, Digi Communications shares increased by 34%, outperforming the local reference index BET, which increased by 11.5%. Since the beginning of the year, investors have traded almost 2.5 million DIGI shares, with the total value surpassing 127 million lei.
